Spoiler alert: I don’t believe there is a Goldilocks cup for everyone.
If you’re still like “what is a Goldilocks cup?” Stay with me. The term Goldilocks simply refers to something that is just right. I had never heard this term until I started following the menstrual cup community. I’ve also heard people refer to the perfect cup as their Unicorn cup.
Okay, now that we’re all caught up, where was I? There is no Goldilocks cup. At least not for me and not for a host of other people. I will confess that I am also one of those people who never believed in Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy BUT not for lack of trying! If I had to self-analyze myself I think it‘s because I am a perfectionist. When a perfectionist is told that something is perfect or just right, they expect just that. So when Santa doesn’t deliver the exact model I asked for or the Tooth Fairy is late I question their alleged existence. Same goes for the proposed goldilocks cup.
Now, I will concede that there are a large number of individuals who have tried a menstrual cup that has truly changed their lives! Especially those individuals who suffer from a very heavy flow. Finding a cup that allows them to work their entire shift without a break or being able to sleep through the night comfortably is truly AMAZING. This post is not about them or their experience. I hope to reach the other people who have invested numerous dollars in their cup journey only to keep missing the mark.
Here’s my theory: it is absolutely possible to find a cup that is comfortable and does not leak. If that’s all you are after there is hope! On the contrary, if you seek to find a cup that checks ALL of your boxes and then some, you may be disappointed. Nonetheless, there still may be hope. The menstrual cup industry is evolving and there are so many types of cups out there.
I’ve tried a lot of them but I am hoping that one day a cup will be invented that meets all of my criteria. This post is not meant to deter anyone from trying a cup because I still maintain my position that menstrual cups are exponentially better than tampons, disposable pads and the like. However, this post is to provide a sense of solidarity to those of us who have yet to find the ONE. The one cup that leaves you satisfied and not looking for any other cup.
As it stands, my primary gripe is that I have to go on a scavenger hunt every time I remove my cup. It seems like there are enough people who have a high cervix that there would be more options but there aren’t. I’ve heard similar complaints from those who have a low cervix — something I can’t relate to no matter how hard I try. The menstrual cups on the market appear to cater to a certain cervix length that apparently is deemed the norm. Anything outside of that is just neglected.
There it is. I’ve said it. Cups aren’t perfect. Maybe I’m the one with the problem since I’m expecting perfection. Very few things in life are perfect. Though I would argue that they should be...but the truth is they aren’t.
I understand that we’re all different and have a variety of needs. When you don’t fit what seems to be the norm in the menstrual cup industry though, the issue becomes ‘what now?’ Fortunately, in my own personal case I still enjoy using a menstrual cup and stay hopeful that one day a cup will come out that speaks to not only all my needs but a fair amount of my wants as well.
Moral of the story is to keep fighting the good fight, lol. Try a new cup when you can or troubleshoot with the one you have. Change is coming! I think.
